Publisher's description

NewsLeecher is a Usenet downloading (leeching) application. It downloads movies, pictures, MP3 files, and software applications, and uses it's inline engine to assemble and decode all the downloads. NewsLeecher takes the best features from NewsBinPro, NewsPro, BNR, GrabIt, and other popular newsreaders and mix them together. As the originator to the NZB format, NewsLeecher has a full support for downloading via NZB files. With the built-in Super Search engine, you can search all the binary Usenet groups at once, for a specific keyword or keystring. NewsLeecher has advanced support for leeching from multiple servers at the same time, and an unlimited number of Usenet servers can be used to download files simultaneously. The built-in automatic multipart posts processing removes the hassle from combining binary post parts one by one. NewsLeecher detects and combine parts by itself.
Editor's review of NewsLeecher

This powerful tool is great for downloading and reading posts to Usenet groups.

NewsLeecher has a slightly busy interface, with lots of buttons and multiple panes, which might intimidate first-time users. But spending some time checking out the program, which provides pop-up explanations for each button when the mouse rolls over it, will soon relieve any confusion, and will verify that the interface is actually well-organized. (We also found an excellent tutorial at http://www.binaries4all.com/newsleecher/ .)

The program quickly grabs (or "leeches") updates from user-specified groups based on user-defined search phrases. However, NewsLeecher doesn't automatically detect servers, so you must enter that information manually while configuring the app. Therefore, this free program is best suited for intermediate and power users. Despite the learning curve, we found this brawny Usenet newsreader to be very satisfactory.
