Editor's review of NewsAloud
NewsAloud generates an audio version of the newsfeeds it grabs from the Web each day, but just don't expect a flawless rendering.
The interface is functional, but not much to look at--it features one large pane with a row of buttons along the top. The icons on the buttons are a bit amateurish and their uses weren't clear until contextual help popped up to explain their purpose. Selecting news sources from a preloaded list was very easy, as was adding sources not on the list. When we selected a headline, the tools voice began to read the story. Disappointingly, the flow wasn't very smooth, some of the words were jumbled, and the audio sometimes skipped words and ran over itself. Although the utility offers options for selecting different voices, NewsAloud used the same feminine voice no matter which option we chose.
There's some sort of novelty in hearing the newsfeeds, but the audio generation for this application has some bugs. It's worth a try for fun, but users might want to consider it twice before spending money on this tool.
