Organize, print, and e-mail recipes with Cook'n Recipe Organizer. You can analyze a meal's nutritional value, satisfy your dietary needs, and make grocery lists and menus. Popular titles include Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Taste of Home, and low carb. Version 6.998 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of Cook'n Recipe Organizer Whether you want to catalog your own recipes or gain access to a database of existing culinary delights, Cook'n Recipe Organizercan take care of the job. The interface is logically arranged and features menus, a planning tool, shopping lists, and large icons for recipes. The only problem we had with the program's design is you must create a cookbook and separate chapters to begin adding your own recipes. If you're looking for a new meal to prepare, the program comes with a large list of built-in recipes, ranging from holiday fare to dishes for diabetics. We especially liked the abilities to quickly calculate calories and nutritional information for all recipes in the database, as well as automatically generate a shopping list for a particular dish. We can see how both professional chefs and home-cooking hobbyists can benefit from what Cook'n Recipe Organizer has to offer.

One of the best ways to improve your brewing is to have a good source of information. BrewWizard 2 provides the home brewer with the Brewer's Encyclopedia, a source of information on a multitude of topics related to home brewing. BrewWizard also provides a Recipe Calculator (with Recipe Database), a Brewing Inventory database, a Beer Style Guide and a way to automatically generate Shopping Lists based on the recipes you want to brew. Version 2.05 is a bug fixing release.Editor's review of BrewWizard Although its appearance is lackluster, BrewWizard does a decent job of letting you catalog your own beer recipes and gain access to an encyclopedia of home-brewing information. The program's bland interface is simple and easy to operate and features a preloaded recipe list, brewing inventory, beer categories, and shopping lists. The encyclopedia includes information and a couple of handbooks regarding home brewing. You can easily add your own recipes, edit existing ones, change units, modify ingredients, view recipe characteristics or create a shopping list from the ingredients. Fermentation instructions and malt formulator also are part of the package. We like how easy it is to operate BrewWizard, and most of its features worked well during assessment. You also can print, import/export recipes, or save them as Web pages. Overall, professional and home brewers alike can benefit from what this title has to offer.

WineBanq wine cellar software. It is a sophisticated software solution for managing your wine cellar electronically. It provides you with all the tools that you need to keep your cellar up to date. WineBanq has the ability to support Tasting Notes from multiple sources. You can use the Tasting Notes to view reviews of wines in your cellar or add those reviews to your wines. Version 8.5.1.542 may include version has some minor bug fixes and adds the ability to create shopping lists for wines that you would like to purchase.Editor's review of WineBanq This comprehensive wine-management application offers several features to track inventory and more, but it requires some getting used to. WineBanq's busy yet well-designed interface is divided into Home, Wine Cellar, Tasting Notes, and Events. Home offers shortcuts for tasks like adding wines and printing reports and also displays the publisher's Web page. Adding wines to the Wine Cellar is easy and the program gathers a wealth of details including region, variety, value, and ratings. Tasting Notes allows you to download and view reviews, and we especially like the option to add these wines to your cellar, complete with ratings and notes. The Events section offers a calendar to track wine events, and with registration, you can download events from the publisher's site. Multiple reports are offered and you can import and export in several formats. The trial version limits you to 30 wines. This application has a lot to offer the serious wine collector, but requires an intermediate level of computer knowledge to comfortably use it.

All of the information is searchable, making finding the right wine a snap. asy searching, sorting, filtering, and grouping Customizable grid Customizable user-defined fields Export to Excel. Version 1.26 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of La Cave du Sommelier This sophisticated database application helps wine collectors catalog and manage wine inventories. La Cave du Sommelier's classy interface includes several buttons to add, import, export, and print reports and entries. The program is preloaded with many choices for wine details, but it's also easy to add your own.Though the program doesn't provide fields for describing wine's appearance, smell, and taste, you can use the comment field to enter wine-tasting remarks. You can add multiple wines and track wine inventory and consumption. A cellar organizer lets you visually manage your wine cellar. In addition, a pairing tool provides suitable wine choices for an array of dishes, though recipes aren't provided.English speakers should note, however, dishes and some lists and options are in French, including the online help file. Freezbe manages your freezer and preserves your food. Thanks to it, you won't throw away your food anymore. It warns you when a food's use-by date is going to be past and remembers where you put each of your foods.Editor's review of Freezbe This easy-to-use application effectively manages and keeps track of foods in your freezer, though it won't wow you with its design.Freezbe has a dull interface, but it is easy to understand and even easier to use. It keeps track of what foods you have in your freezer, along with the quantity, purchase date and expiration date. Food items can be sorted within freezers and racks that you create. You can set the shelf life of different foods such as fruits, vegetables and meats so that nothing goes to waste. Freezbe uses color coding to indicate which foods are nearing or past their expiration dates. A filter tool is available, which is handy for larger databases.Unfortunately, the program doesn't have a print or report tool, but it is available in English and French. It offers a 45-day trial period, which is one of the more generous trial periods on the market. Despite its boring interface, both professional and home cooks will appreciate Freezbe's straightforward design for keeping track of food in the freezer.

Speedy Shopper makes your grocery shopping easier. Start by creating a list of items you buy at the store. These items are placed inside categories (like produce, and snacks) that appear as collapsible folders like Windows Explorer. Each item can have an assigned aisle, allowing you to sort your shopping list by aisle. When you're ready to shop, click the check mark next to each item you want, and it will be placed in your shopping list. Speedy Shopper also helps you manage your coupons, make notes about each item, helps you find items with its powerful search capability, and manage multiple stores. You can also print, email, or save your shopping list as a PDF. Version 1.5 coupons can now have expiration dates (which will notify the user to throw the coupon away once its expired). You can now also disable coupons for a particular store that doesn't accept them (like price clubs). Errands, You can now add errands to the top or bottom of the shopping list, as handy reminders.Editor's review of Speedy Shopper Speedy Shopper is a whiz at creating shopping lists, though it lacks cost tracking. The New Store wizard gets you off to a good start, with numerous categories such as health and beauty, bakery, and dairy. You can create an aisle-by-aisle layout for stores you frequent so your list can flow with the store's design. Speedy Shopper has numerous standard items listed for you to add to your list and you can add and delete items and categories to personalize the program. You can store coupon amounts and expiration dates with selected items, and this clever software even gives warnings when coupons are approaching expiration. Convenient check boxes can be added to your list, and you can change fonts within the program and for your printed list. Lists are saved and printable in Speedy Shopper or in PDF format and can be e-mailed. We even added errands such as trips to the bank and post office. We only wish the program included an option to insert and edit prices to estimate the total cost of grocery lists. Even so, you'll find it hard to forget anything using this program's user-friendly approach to creating shopping lists.

A complete recipe cataloging database system. Features wine selections and database converter--converts pretty much anything to anything. Imports from popular formats MealMaster, CompuChef, MasterCook. Import direct from the clipboard. Email recipes direct from the program. Utilizes CookBooks so you can share your recipes with other users--for example create a cake cookbook. Features MealMaker--you type in the ingredients, it tells you what you can make.Editor's review of RecipeMaster This nicely designed program stores recipes and allows you to share them via e-mail. RecipeMaster's well-organized interface displays recipe categories on the left with entries displayed on the right. You'll first have to open Cookbook Manager to choose one of the two preloaded cookbooks to see recipes. You'll find five folders: Categories, Ingredients, Country, Recipes, and Favorites. A simple but effective search tool is offered. Recipes can be imported and exported in several formats and, with configuration, can be sent via e-mail. You can add or modify categories, ingredients, and units of measurement, but the program lacks features such as a meal planner or shopping-list manager commonly found in similar applications. At first, it seems as if the promised Favourite Wines, MealMaker, and Conversion features weren't included in the program, because you have to maximize the window to see those icons. Still, RecipeMaster has most of the basics down and it's offered free of charge.

Make your life easier with this full-featured, easy-to-use recipe database, meal planning, and shopping management program. Recipes are organized as folders by their categories, and main ingredients and cuisine styles are arranged in a Windows Explorer-style interface. Ingredients in your recipes can be linked to the USDA nutrition database, and the program calculates nutritional values automatically. When making a shopping list of your meal plan or selected recipes, the program condenses the total amount of each ingredient and imports cost information from the ingredient database. Other features include import and export functionality of Meal-Master and MasterCook recipes, the ability to e-mail recipes, a search-and-replace feature, SQL support, and recipe printing (3x5, 4x6 index card supported).Version 1.6.257 added support to print 3x5 and 4x6 index cards; major improvements on user interface.Editor's review of Easy Recipe Deluxe You'll find a wealth of options to view, store, and share recipes, and very little to complain about with Easy Recipe Deluxe. Recipes can be viewed by cuisine type, main ingredient, or multiple other options in no more than a couple of steps. Though the default recipe format was easy to follow, and especially nice when a picture was included, you can choose from many views. The Recipe Editor lets you add or modify dishes, adjust serving sizes, and view nutrition information. Particularly nice is the meal-planning feature that lets you easily create a daily menu from available recipes and add ingredients to a shopping list. Menus can be saved, though not copied or pasted with the trial version, which also limits you to one cookbook. You can create shopping lists from recipes or meals, and include costs. Any user will appreciate this flexible and functional recipe-management program.

Wine Library is a wine cellar management program designed to help you manage and value your wine collections. It's not only an essential tool for wine collectors, but also a great tool for wine enthusiasts. It lets you create a catalog of your wine collection or the wines you've tasted with an Access database. You can record much useful information, such as countries, regions, types, varieties, purchase info, stock info, and detailed drinking/tasting notes. Wine library's user-friendly explorer-style interface allows you to group/sort wines as folders in any combination. Wine details are displayed in a customizable HTML format with a build-in IE window. Besides a powerful search function, Wine Library supports SQL; you can select and manipulate data with this powerful tool. The report feature allows you to print wine detail reports, create and print wine list reports and export them as HTML's and ASCII's. It can also download wine info and tasting notes from supported Web sites. Version 1.1 build 98 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of Wine Library This database application allows wine collectors to catalog and manage inventories. Wine Library has a fairly standard, functional interface with buttons to add, edit, and search for entries. Adding wines is easy and captures detailed information, from country and region of origin to descriptions of the wine's appearance, taste, and cost. Wine Library offers a wide array of choices for wine details, and an easy way to add your own. The options to add notes and an image of the label also are nice touches. Reports can sort inventory multiple ways, including by region, vintage, and value. The program supports SQL query for more efficient data management and lets you browse related Web sites to download information. The trial version is limited to 50 entries, but that's enough time to get a good feel for the program's capabilities. Any wine enthusiast looking for a comprehensive yet accessible inventory system will appreciate what Wine Library has to offer.

With WineBee you can easily track every detail of your wine collection. Instantly find any bottle in your cellar. Print custom neck tags. Create custom reports and restaurant style wine lists. Leave detailed tasting notes from multiple sources. 12,000 + wineries pre-entered to save you time. Print bottle summaries to take with you when purchasing. Assign drink from and drink through dates to your bottles.Editor's review of WineBee 2.2 for Windows Catalog and manage your wine stock with this application, though even without entries the program is fairly large. WineBee stores your wine collection in a FileMaker database, but fortunately its main window is more appealing than a standard database and displays clearly labeled icons for most major functions. It offers preloaded choices for wineries, appellation, grapes, and vineyards, and you can add to these lists. WineBee also lets you add wine merchants and their contact information. When adding a new wine, you can enter bottle name, appellation, grape, and vineyard among other details. The Home tab gives you a comprehensive overview of the latest additions and provides a number of ways to search your inventory. Import files from previous WineBee versions and export information in numerous formats. Conveniently print reports including total inventory, wines from a specific winery, or those ready for drinking. Any wine collector will appreciate what this freeware has to offer, but its hefty download size is a potential turnoff.

Cookbook Wizard recipe software offers a quick and easy way to organize and track your favorite recipes on your PC. You can also search for specific recipes by name, ingredients, category, occasion, preparation method, or a host of other choices. Version 2.0.2 features glossary and spice rack.Editor's review of Cookbook Wizard Even kitchen novices will feel like master chefs after using the encyclopedic Cookbook Wizard. A tabbed interface makes navigation easy and includes a Recipe List, Spice Rack, and ShopList. A battery of more than 700 preloaded recipes is offered with detailed ingredients and instructions, and it's easy to modify them or add your own. Powerful search options let you look for recipes by main ingredients, meal type, or preparation method, and you can add recipe ingredients to create a shopping list. Conveniently bookmark recipes, export in TXT and HTML formats, or create a cookbook in Word. The Spice Rack is a nice feature that lets you match spices to foods and vice versa. This temperature converter allows you to easily convert between Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin at the same time in a very easy to use graphical (GUI) desktop application. All you have to do is click the radio buttons of the format you wish to convert, fill in the field and then hit enter. The converter instantly converts the temp to the other two formats, showing you the temperature you entered right next to the converted temps. Also, newly added is a decimals menu, allowing you full control over your conversion from 0-4 decimal places.Editor's review of ThermoWorks TempConverter This simple freeware converts temperatures from one scale to another including Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin, but offers no other features. ThermoWorks TempConverter's concise interface is very easy to use. Just click on the unit and enter a value, hit Convert, and you're done. Results are displayed in their respective fields, with the ability to convert values up to four decimal points. This small program requires the Java environment, which probably explains its fairly large memory consumption. Though it works and it's free, unless you have a constant need to convert temperatures, there are free online options that will leave your memory free for other things.

Vintage Manager (Cellar Management Software) allows the user to manage the wine inventory for wine collectors and wine cellars. It keeps track of wine inventory, wine type, appellation, grape varieties, price, location, quantity, capturing barcode, Custom Fields, wine tag and purchase place. Advance tasting notes maintenance feature enable the user to enter multiple notes for wine. Advance features like uploading the data from the shared database using web service. Vintage Manager alerts the user about the wine whether its ready to drink or too late to drink wine. The data also can be viewed from the Web. It allows to search the wine in Wine-searcher.com, WineSpectator.com and winecommune.com, matching wine glasses with wine and it keeps track of previously held wines (wines once hold) with transaction history.Editor's review of Vintage Manager This comprehensive wine-management application offers several features to track wine inventory and wine-related information, but it requires quite a bit of free space. Through Vintage Manager's intuitive interface you'll be able to add key information including wine type, variations, appellations, and bottle size. Built-in samples and tools for organizing tasting events, sales, and winemaking activities are readily accessible. A list of matching wine glasses coupled with definitions and dimensions is a nice addition. You'll also be able to add recipes and associate them with a specific wine. Creating an alert list for wines is unique to this program. It has some advanced features for uploading data using SQL Server and a built-in browser to visit wine-related sites. You can create and print a variety of reports, but can only export data in PDF and XML formats. The help files and tool tips are equally helpful, but its hefty download size might turn off some potential users. Any wine enthusiast will appreciate Vintage Manager's capabilities.

Millesime, The Cellar Book is a software program, which allows you to manage one or more cellars (stock intakes, issues and transfers), whether divided among several locations or not. Give assessments to wines and vintages and follow their development through successive testing; display the characteristics, properties and labels of wines and vintages; index the foods and recipes consumed with each wine, and so be able to the identify the wines most suitable for each food later on; and manage restocking by Internet.Editor's review of Millesime, The Cellar Book This comprehensive database application allows for the management of multiple wine cellars, but isn't intuitive to use or navigate. Millesime, The Cellar Book has a plain interface with a file menu and six large buttons that include Wine Definition, Vintages, and Stock. A wizard would have been great to help you get started, as the program offers no clue on how to begin. The help file is extensive but somewhat complicated. The Cellar Book does include blank inventory sheets to compile necessary data and use as guides for entering information. You'll need to add cellars and locations first with The Cellar Book button, then you can add stock with the Intake Stock button. Once entered, you can manage stock, print inventory lists by location, and even add notes about the tasting of any wine. This application has a lot to offer for the serious wine collector, but requires at least an intermediate level of computer knowledge to comfortably use it.

Mixed drink program that contains over 11,600 drinks with more being added every day. Can automatically add hundreds of new drinks using online update feature. CollegeBAR was created to create a user interface that is easy to use and is customizable to the exact user needs. CollegeBAR has the ability to change the background, text, and titles. Your own pictures can be added which display in sequence. Be able to print index cards.Editor's review of CollegeBAR This program belies its rather humble appearance by providing a huge list of recipes for alcoholic drinks and a few other handy tools. CollegeBar's standard gray interface is rather drab-looking by nature, but it is blissfully easy to understand at first glance. The developer has attempted to spruce the gray-box theme up with rotating photos of both watering holes and intoxicated-looking students, but they really don't add much. Beyond its drink recipes, the program's most useful feature is its tool that quickly tells you what cocktails you can mix with the ingredients you currently have in stock. CollegeBar also offers a list of bartending tips and a blood-alcohol-level calculator, useful if you need to convince your friend he's had one too many. If for some reason the program doesn't include one of your favorite drinks, you easily can add the recipe. Though college students will certainly find this application useful, anyone who routinely throws parties will appreciate its no-nonsense approach.

You don't need to remember that 2 2/3 cups is 2.67 cups. The Computer Cookbook is now a standalone program.Version 2.5.6 allows you to email recipes and to include photos with the recipes in your cookbook.Editor's review of The Computer Cookbook This program can quickly store recipes, but doesn't offer an extensive set of features. The Computer Cookbook stores your recipe collection in a FileMaker database, but fortunately its main window is more appealing with colorful and clearly labeled buttons for most major functions. The program is preloaded with 15 recipes, but you can easily add your own or modify and resize ingredients of existing dishes. The e-mail feature was also a nice addition. Although you can search and sort recipes based on name, category, cuisine, or food group, printing options are disabled during trial. The program has an integrated spelling checker and a daily and weekly meal planner.Version 6.1 is network-enabled, adds the user-expandable Word Definition Dictionary, and adds the ability to attach nonprinting comments to each recipe.Editor's review of The Recipe Processor 2000 Select from sample recipes and store your own dishes in this database-style application that lacks spice in its appearance. The Recipe Processor 2000's bland interface is simple and easy to understand, and you can change the color of the skins. Find and input recipes by category including appetizer, dessert, candy, and meat types. You can edit recipes, change the number of servings, and view the calories, ingredients, and directions. Meal planning, a cooking guide, and definitions of simple cooking terms are part of the package. Although you can print a shopping list based on selected recipes, the default SHL extension will be unrecognizable to most machines, so save it as a text file or to your clipboard. You can attach pictures and media files, which seems like overkill but may be useful to some folks. The shareware allows you to store up to 500 recipes, which is a reasonable trial. Cooks who want to organize their personal recipes, access 120 sample dishes, and prepare meals for varying numbers of guests will find The Recipe Processor 2000 quite useful.

Pocket Cook Deluxe Web Edition incorporates 4000 supplied recipes with the ability to add your own recipes, and also for recipes to be imported from industry-standard file formats. With a sophisticated nutritional analyzer built-in, you can quickly work out the effect on your diet of any recipe choice. Manage your recipes by using multiple cookbooks and copy and move recipes between them (and your PDA if you have one). Use your digital camera to attach pictures to recipes. It comes with a built-in shopping list, menu planner, and our optional Web transfers between our Web server and your PC. Version 7.3.17 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of Pocket Cook Deluxe Web Edition Cooking aficionados will appreciate this feature-rich recipe and cookbook collector. Pocket Cook Deluxe Web Edition has a well-organized interface that makes navigation easy. Initially, all recipes are displayed, but the program offers a nice array of tools to narrow your search. You can immediately filter by categories like seafood, vegetables, or breakfast, or use one of four search options that includes ingredients, style, and nutritional values. The program offer more than ingredients and directions for recipes. You can add them to a menu planner or shopping list, e-mail to friends, or change the serving size instantly. There are three options each to import and export recipes, and you can even create cookbooks and add your own recipes. The only downside is the 14-day limit with the trial version. Anyone looking for a flexible recipe manager and menu planner will be impressed with all this program offers.

Electronic Recipe Manager is a user-friendly recipe management program, distributed with more than 3,000 recipes. Users can add recipes into the database easily; store drink, food, and other recipe types; import and export recipes to share with other users; store drink and food ingredients in separate cabinets; search with an advanced search engine by title, ingredient, category, or any combination of database fields; use searches based on cabinet items, only returning recipes in which you have all ingredients on hand; provide an itemized shopping list of all ingredients, including total quantities of each ingredient needed for all recipes in a recipe group or menu; and preview, print, and save any recipe or recipe group as a text file, or as standard rich text, which can be loaded into many word processors. Its coolest feature is you can tell it what ingredients are in your cabinet (check off list) and it will find all of the recipes you can make, using only those ingredients. This works for both food and drink recipes. Version 4.0 can resize all screens, has hyperlink help throughout the software, and will auto update any new changes.Editor's review of Electronic Recipe Manager Tired of hearing, ""What's for dinner?"" This robust recipe-organizing program has a couple of cool features that can help better manage your cupboard as well as your recipe collection. Some issues following download were annoying, but not paralyzing: the program has a habit of popping up Read Me files without prompt, as well as repeated requests to agree to the software's licensing agreement. Once we got to the main part of the program, we were impressed with the size and scope of features. Recipes can be added, searched or printed, and each recipe has plenty of data fields to cover all required details -ingredients, preparation time, even nutritional information. Covering both food and drink, it also has a special feature that has you enter what's in the fridge and spits out a recipe with just the ingredients you have on hand. It's a great resource for bartenders in a rut, too. Overall, Electronic Recipe Manager is a useful program for a reasonable price.

i-Recipes is easy-to-use Recipe Managment Software. i-Recipes allows you to directly import recipes from our online recipe resource, with only one click. Add a unlimited number of recipes and recipe books. Directly search our online recipe resource for recipes. You can add new recipes easily and fast, separate ingredients for each step of the recipe, edit recipes, and import recipes directly from Eden's Kitchen vast recipe repository.Version 2004.0.3 features improved Backup & Restore, adds Browser History, and enhances usability.Editor's review of i-Recipes This recipe database boasts a fine design scheme, but its trial restriction certainly isn't ideal. i-Recipe's best attribute is probably its clean, elegant main interface, which strangely reminds us of iTunes. Manually adding or importing recipes from the Web site is simple, allowing you to enter such information as ingredients, prep time, and detailed instructions. You even can add images to any entry. The program lets you alter the font size and organize recipes by courses, but it doesn't allow you to create custom categories such as nutritional information. The biggest issue we have with i-Recipes is with the 10-recipe trial, which is somewhat disappointing considering many of its competitors allow you to add unlimited recipes for a certain number of days. But if you're a frequent cook who values design over flexibility, i-Recipes warrants consideration.

Digital Cookbook is recipe-management software with many features. With this program, you can easily organize your recipes, ingredients, measurement units, and menus, and perform nutritional analysis, calculate costs, create shopping lists, import and export recipes, and even send recipes to your friends by e-mail. This application has a powerful search engine with which you can search your local database by various criteria, such as recipe name and type, cooking time, number of servings, nutrition facts, and even content, choosing ingredients you want included or excluded. You easily can calculate costs for the menus you create. Import and export functions give you the possibility to exchange recipes with your friends. The print engine lets you print your own cookbooks and menus. With the new version, registered users can apply for a free recipe-update pack with 10,000 recipes and 200 cooking tips.Version 3.16 may have unspecified features, enhancements, and bug fixes.Editor's review of Digital Cookbook We are what we eat, and Digital Cookbook aims to help us monitor this serious matter, though it could do so a bit more intuitively. Though the interface is clear and logical in its way, the developers could use simpler language at times. Certain tasks, such as adding photos to cooking tips, are far from straightforward. Also, the typical cook might faint upon seeing one of the obtuse error messages in this program. In addition to storing recipes, Digital Cookbook helps you plan entire menus for large families or even a 20-person dinner party. Just choose dishes for your menu and the utility will calculate the quantity of ingredients and an estimated price. Then just print the shopping list. The program also can find recipes based on nutritional characteristics. If only Digital Cookbook counted calories and nutrients for entire menus rather than only for separate recipes. Also, several bugs are still floating around in this release, but for those equally comfortable at the keyboard and in the kitchen, Digital Cookbook might prove quite the useful sous-chef.

Kitchen is a recipe organizer that allows you to keep track of all your recipes as well as automatically generate shopping lists, e-mail recipes to friends, and print out and export your recipe data.Editor's review of Kitchen Despite a lack of in-depth features, this program makes a handy solution to the need to catalog your collection of recipes. Kitchen stores your recipes in a FileMaker database, but fortunately its main window looks more appealing than a standard database and displays clearly labeled icons for most major functions. However, we wish the program offered a few preinstalled recipe templates to reduce the learning curve. When adding a new recipe, you can enter such information as prep time, cook time, calories, fat, carbs, and difficulty level. You then head to a screen where you list all ingredients and detailed instructions. Kitchen lets you search your database by keyword and sort by category, cuisine, time, and difficulty, but since the trial version only lets you add 15 recipes, you probably won't need these features. You also can make and print shopping lists, as well as e-mail recipes from directly within the application. We think all cooking enthusiasts could benefit from what Kitchen has to offer.

StarChef Light is the perfect entry-level, recipe-software tool for small businesses and home users. You can build a database of ingredients, recipes, suppliers, and menus. All information can be organized by category for easy reference and retrieval. Specify preparation instructions, perform recipe costing, and print attractive, informative recipe cards with pictures. Add your recipes to menus and let StarChef build formatted Microsoft Word menu layouts for your restaurant.Editor's review of StarChef Light A comprehensive database application for managing menus, StarChef Light's feature set is, if anything, too extensive. Through MDB databases, you can store data on recipes, menus, suppliers, and costs for multiple restaurants and cafes. You also can record the details of specific dishes, such as preparation, calories, cost, and photos. The trial version disables some database categories. StarChef Light might be a godsend to restaurant managers or chefs, but if your needs are limited to storing recipes and shopping lists, you might look for something less complicated.

BarSim is an extremely realistic bartending simulation program that recreates the experience of being behind the bar, all while you learn over 150 of the most common mixed drink recipes in a fun, challenging, & interactive game. Features include: 150 of the most commonly ordered, up to date drink recipes available; fun facts, and challenging Trivia round; bonus bartending trick/magic lessons; recipe database allows you to add, modify, browse, and print recipes used in the program; extremely realistic graphics; every bar tool and ingredient imaginable is available. You don't need to be a bartender or a bartender in training to appreciate this interactive, educational, and fun program.Editor's review of BarSim This hefty simulation program helps users practice their bartending skills, but it's light on assistance. BarSim's interactive interface is designed to look like a real bar, with liquor cabinets, a glass rack, recipes, and ticket windows. It gives you all the tools and ingredients you'll need to prepare drinks. Once in the bar area, your drink knowledge is tested as you'll have to prepare drinks listed in the ticket window. If you don't know the recipe, you can click on the recipe window, but it will cost you some points.Though BarSim is easy enough to understand, a tutorial on the different elements of the bar would have lessened the learning curve, especially for bartending novices. It provides three difficulty levels and 150 drinks to choose from. It also has a recipe editor that allows you to create, modify, and print drink recipes. The graphics and sounds are acceptable by today's standards. BarSim only permits a three-day trial period, which is stingy for our tastes, and bartending tips, trivia, and lessons are not available during the trial. The 25MB file size isn't great either. Despite those issues, bartenders of all skill levels will say "Cheers" to this fun, challenging drink simulation game.

Tired of writing down shopping lists? Create a list or many types of lists of items you commonly use. Once a list is created, you simply load it and check the items you require. You can then print off the list. Even better, e-mail the list to someone else in a single step, and let him or her do the shopping. This simple yet powerful program eliminates some of the hassle of grocery shopping.Editor's review of My Shopping List Just as its name suggests, My Shopping List lets you build, save, and alter any number of grocery lists. You simply populate each of the category tabs, such as Dairy or Vegetables, with items your household consumes and the quantity you want. When it's time to shop, you can check off individual items in each category. Right-clicking gives you options for checking or unchecking all items in the category or on the entire list. You can print or e-mail the finished list, complete with a Notes field. However, it would be nice if unused categories didn't appear on the final list. E-mailing requires that you set Outlook as your default e-mail client. Also, the quantity appears too far from the grocery item it describes; a table format or grid lines would improve legibility. Finally, changing the quantity of an item for the printed or e-mailed list changes the underlying quantity on your saved list, even if you don't press the Save button. Despite these quirks, My Shopping List offers enough flexibility and functionality to earn a home on many family PCs.

Create, organize, print, and e-mail your recipes, calculate costs, and get nutritional information. The application's other features include an ingredient database, inventory, Web integration, import and export, a reference library, shopping list, a powerful search engine, clone recipes, customizing recipe views, and an integrated spelling checker. It comes with more than 650 free recipes.Editor's review of Bartender's Companion This program stores recipes for a wide variety of cocktails and alcoholic beverages. Like most database-oriented applications of this kind, Bartender's Companion's interface is rather plain Jane, although its logically organized design makes it easy to locate any recipe you need in moments. In the left pane, you'll find a tree-based structure organized into such categories as beer drinks, cocktails, frozen drinks, and punches. Clicking any category reveals numerous subcategories; for example, the cocktails section is broken down into drinks based on vodka, rum, bourbon, and tequila. Not only does this program tell you how to make each drink, it also gives you nutritional information, such as calories and carbs. Although the included library of recipes seems rather comprehensive, you can add your own via a simple right-click. Professional bartenders and folks who host a lot of cocktail parties can benefit from this handy program.

Whether you're just starting out or a devoted chef, get cooking with maximum convenience. Judy's Kitchen helps you make weekly meal planners, create grocery lists, and organize your entire recipe collection. Lacking creative inspiration? Pick a general cuisine category and allow Judy's Kitchen to suggest a dish for you, plus optionally add the requisite ingredients to your grocery list. Other powerful features include a recipe categorization and search tool, recipe e-mailer, and USDA-based recipe-nutrition analyzer.Editor's review of Judy's Kitchen 2003 This program helps you cook a variety of dishes, calculate nutrition, and balance your meals. Installation takes a while, but after seeing the main window and navigating it for a while, you begin to understand why--Judy's Kitchen 2003 contains a huge number of recipes. The interface has a few glitches, though. For one thing, if an ingredient name is long, it gets cut off. Also, even once you've selected a product from the expansive grocery list, the Enter button doesn't add the product to your shopping list. More functional is the spreadsheet that lets you enter dates and what you had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The nutrition table calculates everything in calories, shows the contents of each recipe, and so on. Home cooks and dieters ought to appreciate this download.

Kalua Cocktails is a program that aims to help you plan out your next cocktail party perfectly. There's a picture to go with every one of the more than 1,100 cocktails, so your guests can even pick a cocktail according to color. To make sure the program only lists cocktails for which you have the ingredients, simply activate the House Bar function. So that you may offer your guests the greatest possible variety of cocktails, the Shopping Assistant will tell you how to stock your bar most effectively. When the party's over, the Blood Alcohol Level Assistant helps you talk your guests into taking a taxi instead of driving.Editor's review of Kalua Cocktails The trial version of this promising bartender's guide features 100 cocktails that range from the refreshing Cuba Libre to the creamy Grasshopper. Kalua Cocktails classifies drinks by category (longdrink, cooler) and flavor (fruity, strong). The cocktail assistant asks you what kind of event, drink, and alcohol content you want, but the results are restricted. You can search by flavor, but once you try to search by category, which is trial-restricted, you'll have to restart the program to reactivate flavor searches. The Barman's Dictionary defines all the ingredients and equipment, adding helpful suggestions about the garnishes. The program can calculate the quantities of each ingredient you'll need to make any amount of the selected drink. The BAC Assistant estimates blood alcohol level based on the number of specific drinks, your weight, and the time elapsed; the trial version will run it once. The interface lets you change color schemes and mute the loud music. You can print preview, but not print. Some of the ingredients are too specific (Bailey's Irish Cream), while some are too generic (Vodka, Bourbon), and we longed for a way to add ingredients. Despite the restrictions, bon vivants and merry hostesses will appreciate Kalua Cocktails.

ERMster is a Napster-like search engine for recipes. This tool provides a link to the ERMster network, which is a group of recipe lovers from all over the world. ERMster is designed to allow users to share recipes, chat with other users, search for a specific recipe, and provide a place where recipe lovers can collaborate. Although ERMster is stand-alone, it has added functionality when installed with the Electronic Recipe Manager (ERM). A freeware version of ERM is available at the developer's site. Without the freeware version of ERM installed with ERMster, users cannot print directly from ERMster or import recipes.Editor's review of ERMster Instead of searching your peer-to-peer network for music, you can search ERMster for recipes that cover food, drink, and household. While it's not the prettiest application in the world, the tabs and functions make it easy to navigate and operate the program. The search function runs quickly and lets you find ways to use rosemary or Jagermeister. If you want to save a recipe or print it directly from the program, you need to install the publisher's Electronic Recipe Manager, but you can easily copy and paste the text into a document. On the other hand, if you're the type of person who wants to keep a database of recipes, it's probably worth your time to check out ERM. We couldn't figure out how to upload our recipes, but that probably also requires ERM. When we first started the program, it alerted us it was updating some server information, which struck us as convenient, rather than alarming. The program takes up less than 8MB of memory. Just about anyone looking for new home and kitchen ideas should look into ERMster.

Durbin's Bar Guide is a cocktail recipe application for home use that searches for recipes based on the ingredients that the user has available. Other information provided includes descriptions of various types of wines and beers. This is a publicly available shareware application. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.Editor's review of Durbin's Bar Guide This application offers drink recipes, a drink glossary, and manages inventory, but it lacks standard features found in similar programs.Durbin's Bar Guide has a dreary, uninspiring interface, but the tabbed layout makes it easy enough to view preloaded cocktail recipes, along with information about different types of beer and wine. Additionally, it's easy to add your own recipes or search drinks by a recipe or name. We also appreciate the offered tips and instructions.Durbin's Bar Guide lacks print and export features, or the ability to create a shopping list, and these are fairly standard in similar apps. It's not much in the way of looks, but this basic application makes a decent bartender's helper.

My Recipe Books now offers quick ingredient entering, along with more detailed searching, nutritional values for recipes, exporting to iPods and other hand held devices. My Recipe Books is a complete recipe organizer that allows you to create, edit and delete recipes, create a shopping list, e-mail your recipes, password protect your books, import from friends, export to RTF files for word processing.Editor's review of My Recipe Books 4 Despite a few minor misses, this easy-to-use database application conveniently stores your favorite recipes. My Recipe Books 4's novice-friendly interface offers clearly labeled graphical buttons to manage recipes. The program comes preloaded with only a few dishes, but it's easy to add recipes and create categories and subcategories. You simply select, tick, or type ingredients and measurements to get your recipes set up. Recipes are neatly displayed, and you can add images to complement the text instructions. My Recipe Book 4's shopping list generator and resizing tool are handy features, and we liked the detailed nutritional information for recipes, although a meal planner would have been a nice addition. The search tool is nothing special, but it works well. You can export recipes into one format (RTF) or you can send them to your iPod (but only once during trial). You're also limited to two recipes, categories, and subcategories during trial. Overall, the recipes are nicely displayed and easy to follow, and we liked the option to add images. My Recipe Books may lack the features found in more expensive apps, but it covers the basics very well.

You can also add your own recipes to this system along with modifying the existing ones. You can adjust each recipe by yield or portion size without going into the master edit screen.Version 1.1 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of Military Recipes Database This database program houses a huge collection of recipes developed by the U.S. military, but it doesn't quite live up to the publisher's claims.Military Recipes Database comes with a simple, easy-to-use interface. Recipes are sorted into categories that are presented in an organized tree listing. The program offers a few buttons to add, edit or print recipes. A search tool is included as well as the option to resize a recipe, which comes in handy for fitting information onto recipe cards. We appreciated that guidelines, instructions, charts, and conversion tables were included in the program.During testing, adding a category was easy, but it then failed to appear on the tree list. We also found that despite the publisher's claims, users can add and edit their own recipes but they won't be able to save them. Also, some users might shy away from the 11MB size and seven-day trial period. Despite these drawbacks, cooking enthusiasts might find the quantity of recipes and cooking guidelines offered in Military Recipes Database hard to resist.

Easy to use recipe software with a friendly user interface, easy recipe entry, photo support, spell checking, support for informational text, fast and easy searching, duplicate recipe finder, flexible printing options, integrated meal planner, and grocery manager. Imports Meal-Master, Mastercook, and many other formats, with additional manual import for Web pages, newsgroups, and other sources. Exports to Meal-Master and Mastercook. Version 5.4 has new installer, interface changes, improved recipe editor, new spell checker, improved duplicate finder, improved importing and printing, improved grocery and meal screens, various bug fixes.Editor's review of Home Cookin Although it lacks some features found in other recipe database programs, Home Cookin' does a passable job of organizing recipes and assisting with meal planning.Using its simple tabbed interface, you can either type in recipes or quickly add them by copying and pasting. We're also able to upload and paste in BMP images during tests. Resizing the number of servings was simple, and the program automatically adjusts the measurements in the recipe. Its handy reference materials include measurement equivalents and an illustration of the USDA Food Pyramid. We also like the meal-planning calendar. Unfortunately, importing and exporting recipes was a bust. The program's "Copy to Clipboard" option gave a jumbled mess when exporting, removing images along the way. Importing was no better. The imported recipe was a mix of odd, erroneous characters. Home Cookin' doesn't give nutritional information for dishes, and the application's grocery lists aren't directly tied to selected recipes, unlike other programs in this category. We also were disappointed to only find 15 preloaded recipes to go along with the 15-day trial. Beginning cooking enthusiasts may want to try Home Cookin', but veterans may feel as if they've been burned.

Manage your recipes with this easy to use program. Search recipes by Author, Name, Source or Ingredients. Sharing your recipes with your friends is as easy as an email. A simple recipe Website creator is also included.Editor's review of Recipe Database There's no charge for this database to collect your recipes, but its overly simplistic design isn't very appealing. Recipe Database's compact interface is bland, but navigating is nearly foolproof. Large buttons offer access to all of its features, and you can easily add recipes through a Wizard-like approach. Just enter what is being asked for (e.g., recipe name, author, number of servings, ingredients, and directions) and you're ready to go.Recipes are presented in a plain, Notepad-like layout. You can add recipes to your Favorites or view all recipes. Search tools are simple and effective but case-sensitive. Recipe Database exports recipes in TXT and RCP (a format proprietary to the program) files. The program doesn't include sample entries or a Help file, but help isn't really necessary to figure things out.Unfortunately, the program doesn't allow you to sort dishes into categories, a time-saving feature found in similar apps. This freeware application serves as a simple recipe collector, but there are a host of other programs that offer additional features and have a more polished presentation.

Professional recipe management software that has user-friendly features to manage merchandise and recipes that are designed to make foodservice professionals intricate task easier and faster. It is packed with helpful and useful features like recipe creation and costing, merchandise list, nutrient calculation, recipe printing with pictures, resizing, and shopping lists. Version 6.1.4 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of Calcmenu Chef 2006 It takes more than good cooking to run a successful restaurant; fanatical attention must be paid to every dollar spent. This feature-packed, but somewhat unreliable, application aims to help food-service professionals squeeze the maximum profit out of their kitchens. Calcmenu 2004 Chef's tabbed interface includes several features that for creating menus and controlling food cost. The Merchandise function and Recipe Creator let you create, search, and modify recipes, obtain ingredient lists, and calculate food cost percentages. Another helpful feature is the ability to attach three pictures to each recipe for menu standardization and training. The calculation function allows users to figure their profit margin and selling price. Other features include Recipe Exchange, Nutrient Calculation, Menu Planning, and Shopping List. Professional chefs, caterers, and restaurateurs will appreciate Calcmenu 2004 Chef's ability to easily standardize menus, define portion sizes, and track inventory to control costs. The downside? A hefty download size and some disturbing stability issues. Also, be aware that the program needs Microsoft's free SQL Server Desktop Engine to run. We wouldn't bet the business on this just yet, but a few improvements would make that prospect a lot easier to stomach.

Recipes Ship is easy to use recipe software that allows you to collect, exchange, and organize your recipes. Print out cookbooks, create Web pages. Large free databases totaling over 600+ recipes available to download. Simple, cheap, and functional recipe manager software.Editor's review of Recipes Ship This helpful database application comes with a wide variety of recipes and allows you to add your own, but it misses a few features found in similar applications.Recipes Ship's non-resizable interface lacks spice but is easy enough to navigate. You can easily add your own recipes to the database or choose from the preloaded recipes, which include international dishes from Africa, Korea, Pakistan and other countries. You also can go to the publisher's Web site to download more recipes, though it's important to note that once you download a recipe you have to manually copy and paste it into the program. Drag the fluid level up or down, and the conversion values scroll with the movement. Features the most comprehensive database available of past, present and metric fluid volumes, and alcohol measures. You can instantly re-order units lists, predictively search for units and generate a CSV-textfile of chosen conversions.Editor's review of AlcoVol This single-function utility quickly converts fluid volumes from one unit to another. AlcoVol's busy interface is divided into two sections: select the original unit from the left pane, enter a number in the text box below, and choose the conversion unit from the right pane. Results are displayed in the text box below the conversion unit. A graphic of a flask visually shows the comparison. AlcoVol lets you save results in a CSV format, but lacks a way to select a destination folder (files were found in the program's folder). A wide range of units is offered, including those specific to a country like the Portuguese almude or the Swedish kanna. No Help file is included. Though not particularly feature-rich, AlcoVol makes converting fluid volumes easy enough for any user and it's offered as freeware.
