Busy parents will love the single-button approach to instantly block all access and to grant access across the board too. Key Stage 2 English's main window occupies the entire screen with a graphical bookshelf. Each book represents a subcategory to strengthen your child's spelling, punctuation, common errors, vocabulary, and more. Once we selected a category and level, instructions were read aloud. With no tool tips, however, we had to guess which button checks answers, advances to the next question, or pauses exams. The featured to-do list is handy, and kids will like the crossword, letris, and word search games. Although we like it, Key Stage 2 English gives an unreasonably stingy five minutes for trial and responds slowly to keystroke entries. The 95MBs required for download isn't a great selling point either. Putting these issues aside, we do recommend Key Stage 2 English (Ages 7-9) to parents of elementary school kids or even middle schoolers needing to brush up on their skills.

Since it really only handles one job, ImageBeagle is both easy to configure and a snap to use, letting you specify which drives or system areas to scour before going to work. After loading our test machine with a bevy of racy shots, we scanned our computer and got generally positive results. Although the program gave us a few erroneous findings and didn't locate several black-and-white pornographic shots, it sniffed out the majority of smut on our machine. We tested ImageBeagle using its normal sensitivity settings, but both high and low modes are available for those who want more or less protection. Once the program has scanned your machine, you can choose to sift through the results and quarantine any objectionable content. Even though this application might not be foolproof, it makes a good line of defense for both concerned parents and system administrators.

Upon launching, Minisebran takes over your entire screen and is accompanied by an annoying background sound; thankfully, there's an option for disabling sound. The interface uses large buttons, which makes it ideal for children. The program features a game that instructs players to pick the object that differs from the group. If your child answers correctly, a smiley face appears over the answer; however, an incorrect answer prevents the user from moving to the next question. It would've been nice if positive statements such as "Great Job" or "That's Right" were given, as in similar educational software. Subjects regarding shapes, sounds, or more fun-filled games to entertain kids would have been nice additions to the program. We're quite awed at how we can type and browse the Internet by simply hovering the mouse over the simulated keys the application places onscreen. In our tests, Palm Pad quickly responded as the pointer rested on the key of choice. Still, we aren't too pleased that the keyboard layout, reaction time for selecting keys, and size and onscreen positioning of the keyboard can't be configured. Though Palm Pad's keys are contiguous, it's not the standard keyboard layout. The unique design definitely requires some acclimation, certainly not a good thing considering its stingy 10-use trial restriction. Despite the negatives, those suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome or just about anyone who can't or doesn't want to deal with a keyboard may find Palm Pad beneficial.

You can restrict access to certain programs, hard drives, and Web sites, and disable Control Panel applets, Start Menu items, Internet Explorer, and some Windows registry settings. What's more, you can set pcParent Watchdog to capture screenshots, and also monitor visited Web sites, launched applications, and keyboard activity. The program keeps detailed log reports and time usage statistics. You can even charge users for their time spent. Happily, it can't be uninstalled or disabled via the Task Manager. It synchronizes your clock with a few atomic servers and prevents PC-savvy kids from tampering with your machine's date and time. Our only complaint: pcParent Watchdog works only with Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers. All in all, pcParent Watchdog's wealth of features may initially appear confusing, but once you get going you'll see that it's well worth the effort.

The kid-friendly interface uses large graphical buttons, and children can switch between solid colors or a rainbow blend by simply clicking on an animated color bubble on the menu bar. Pictures are automatically saved in JPEG format upon exit, a nice feature so kids don't accidentally lose their works of art. The sound effects can become rather annoying; luckily, some password-protected parental controls are afforded and parents can turn the sound off, adjust the bubble speed, and hide the print button.You won't pay for MagicBook, but if you want to add more images from publisher's site or create your own, you'll need to make a donation. You're stuck with one-hour blocks though. Nothing shorter is allowed, and each block starts at the top of the hour. You also can't allow a set amount of time-per-day use. You can choose how the program handles users accessing the system during off hours. You merely choose to have the system hibernate, log off, shut down, or stand by.This program grants all-or-nothing access to the PC. You cannot limit select programs or Web sites. We would have liked more than the seven-day trial, but this program is simple enough for even the most novice PC-using parent to implement.

Math Quizzer generates random questions, and kids can quickly press a button to see how many they've done correctly, as well as their current score. Unfortunately, the program doesn't tackle any other math skills such as addition, subtraction, or division and it doesn't have difficulty levels for advancement. Nonetheless, Math Quizzer is a good freeware application for grade-school students needing to improve their multiplication skills.

The color-coded calendar marks projected menstruation dates as red, while days with the highest probability of conceiving a baby boy or girl are highlighted in blue and yellow respectively. It's simple but easy to read. Unlike similar applications, Sundo Ovulation Calendar doesn't record actual menstruation dates or create any charts or reports. You can view projections by month up to the year 2099 and the scroll bars make it easy to view specific months in a specific year. There's no help file, but one isn't really necessary. Although you're warned in advance about the pop-ups, it doesn't make them any less annoying because they do, as promised, appear every single time you select a date or enter information. Aside from this demo quirk, the program works quickly and couldn't be simpler to use.

One of the two control panels displays the current drill with arrows below to select from the five options, which range from preprimer to third grade. You can view but not edit the word list associated with a drill by clicking on the display button. The other panel lets you switch the view, choose one of numerous skins, and exit the program. No help file is offered. Though it's not the most feature-rich reading program, Sight Words Buddy is easy to use and it's offered free of charge.
