Version 1.92 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of Internet Cyclone
In the vein of "your mileage may vary," this Internet connection optimizer may help you a little, a great deal, or simply not at all. Internet Cyclone's interface won't blow you away, but it is compact and informative. Optimizing your system is an art, not a science, with this tool. You choose your connection type, and with merely a click, Internet Cyclone will adjust numerous Windows settings. Whether they improve your connection speed depends greatly on your ISP, router, and system. This utility offers three methods to boost speed, but doesn't explain the reasoning behind each. It doesn't hurt to try all three since you supposedly can save your original settings. But wait, those original settings failed to save after our test machines rebooted. This demo also blocks saving select settings that are available only to registered users. You can change some values manually, but this utility doesn't help inexperienced users understand the pertinent settings. Novices will like the automatic configuration modes, while advanced users will appreciate having all the controls in a single place. The users who do gain significant speed will call this utility a lifesaver, but the rest will wonder if it was worth the trouble.

DU Meter helps you maximize your bandwidth potential by letting you see just how much of it is actually utilized at any given time. DU Meter can display bandwidth data in a real-time graph, a numerical display, or both. Other features include the ability to notify the user and/or disconnect all active dial-up connections when the data transfer rate drops below a certain minimum value, audible signals you can set to go off each time a specified amount of data is transferred, and a display of the number of total bytes transferred. There are many reasons why you might want to monitor your network activity. Watching your data transfer rates can be very enlightening as you download a web page, email, or a software application. This will give you a much better idea of how long the operation will take. It will also let you know how efficient your Internet connection is. And it can protect you from dangerous activity. There is no better tool for the job than DU Meter.Version 3.5 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.Editor's review of DU Meter
For hard-core Net heads, merely having a broadband connection isn't enough. It has to be an optimized connection. Like mechanics tuning an engine, they readjust their system settings until they've squeezed out every last kilobit per second. And how do they know if they've succeeded? By using a program like DU Meter, a simple but effective utility that provides statistics for Internet connections. In its minimized state, DU Meter displays a tiny window showing a traffic graph and the current upload/download speed. Clicking the system-tray icon provides concise reports on Internet usage on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. A stopwatch feature lets you measure traffic over a specific period of time. The program can alert you when traffic exceeds a threshold or the connection gets too slow. DU Meter doesn't take much memory, and it basically just works. It's a good choice for bandwidth fiends, and may also interest users subscribed to tariff plans with traffic limitations.

This small utility serves up a buffet of information regarding your computer's Internet connection. Installing the program was a curious affair that required us to download an additional application; we wondered why it didn't just come bundled with the program. At launch, Onlineeye Pro offers a detailed tutorial, then appears as a tiny but colorful graph that displays the speed at which your computer is receiving and sending information to the Web. We liked the fact you can change the graph's color, appearance, and transparency. Right-clicking the window or the system-tray icon lets you access the program's numerous features. Besides bandwidth speed, the utility supplies other information about your Net connection, including data pertaining to hosts, modems, and IP addresses. The Optimizer supports tuning any Internet connection type, from Dialup, Cable, Satellite, and DSL to commercial-leased lines. It creates automatic backup of all parameters, for easy reversal of the changes as well. Version 2.0.3 is a bug fixing release.Editor's review of SG TCP Optimizer
This well-designed program tests and improves your Internet connection speed, but it needs an experienced operator. SG TCP Optimizer's compact, tabbed interface logically presents all settings and tests. We found SG TCP Optimizer efficient from the moment it quickly opened. The six tabs presented general and advanced settings, a tool to discover your system's largest possible nonfragmented packet, a calculator to figure your RWIN value, a latency test, and a quick Windows Registry editor. If you have no idea what those settings do, this program isn't for you. If you do have some experience, a short tutorial helps you quickly discover and enter the proper Registry settings to improve connection speed. Settings are easily saved in backup files, making it easy to try different settings and revert if you accidentally slow connection speed. The help file gives basic information, although it's nothing a system administrator doesn't know. Novices, on the other hand, shouldn't bother with this application. Its many settings, though easily changed, could cause serious system slowdowns if improperly altered. System administrators and advanced users will love this freeware's small size, powerful functions, and helpful tests.

A program that allows to connect to any Internet service through a chain of SOCKS or HTTP proxies to hide the actual IP address. It also possible to work with a programs that are not designed to support SOCKS protocol directly.Version 3.11.148 features modified SOCKSsifying engine and supports more apps.Editor's review of SocksChain
Aimed both at hiding a surfer's tracks online, and at using Internet applications blocked by a firewall, SocksChain is useful but occasionally unstable. The program functions by connecting to a series of SOCKS servers, or proxy servers, which mask a surfer's original Internet address. Unlike some other similar programs, it can retrieve a list of available servers from the developer's site, check them for availability, and periodically switch which proxies it is using. It also offers a simple way to ensure that Internet applications such as Web browsers or instant messenger tools will work with these proxy servers, without needing any manual connection tweaking. However, we found that establishing a full chain of proxy servers--the safest way to surf--was difficult even with this tool. Once online, we found the connection to be a bit unstable, with occasional problems sending e-mail or connecting to a site. However, these performance issues may not dissuade surfers who are seeking a real approximation of anonymity online.

There are many network applications that do not support working through proxy servers and thus cannot be used behind a LAN or firewall. With Proxifier you can work with any Internet client (browsers, FTP, SSH, IRC, ICQ, Messengers, P2P clients, video/audio and games) through a network that is separated from the Internet by a firewall; no special configuration is required for the client software. Proxifier allows you to force all network connections in the system to work through a proxy server or a chain of proxy servers.Editor's review of Proxifier
Every now and then, a Net user wants extra privacy online, or to use a piece of software that's being blocked by a firewall. Proxifier helps with both of these tasks. In our tests, we successfully used a mail client behind a firewall that had Port 110--the conduit for the mail program's data -closed. The program also can unblock other applications, such as a browser, a P2P client, an FTP utility, or instant-messenging software. It can hide a Net user's IP address while she's surfing, and operate through a chain of SOCKS proxy servers for added privacy. The software also provides a good tool for monitoring bandwidth usage and network connections. Though it should be simple to configure for advanced users, it may be daunting to users who aren't familiar with the idea of proxy IP addresses and port numbers. It doesn't provide an automatically updated list of proxy servers to use on the Net, a feature we would expect in a program that costs this much. Nor can it automatically switch among proxies to find the fastest one available. Overall, Proxifier can be a valuable privacy tool, but it's not user-friendly enough to be recommended for most mainstream computer users.

So long as you know what you're doing, PowerTerm is the ultimate in terminal emulation. It can also handle several connection types, from Telnet to FTP and CTERM, and comes with a battery of handy tools for keyboard mapping, script recording, file transferring, and much more. If you're not already a wiz at terminal emulation, this software isn't going to hold your hand. Although there are plenty of help files to peruse, the language used is pretty much for pros only. There are ample opportunities to process almost all varieties of tariff plans, which are used by ISPs of different countries (with monetary expenses for one business hour and for 1MB of traffic).Editor's review of Internet Connection Counter (English)
Full of insight and analysis, Internet Connection Counter doesn't improve your connection; it just tells you more about it. At first glance the program seems pretty simple--it's just a toolbar showing statistics. However, when you open it and see the options, it's actually amazingly complex. The tabbed interface is friendly, however, and navigating your settings is not complicated. Besides customizing your toolbar view, you also can customize the methods and metrics the program uses for its data collection. If your ISP is charging you per minute, you can even calculate how much money you've spent surfing the Web during a particular time frame. Internet Connection Counter will record sites you've visited and calculate how many megabytes were exchanged during your session. Anyone curious about the inner workings of online connections doubtlessly will find this a useful tool.

Send and receive e-mail with attachments up to 14 times faster. Browse the Web up to six times faster. Give your modem a major boost. Miliki Dial-Up Accelerator works with all types of modem connectivity (including wireline, wireless and satellite) and modem speeds (14.4K, 28.8K, 56K and ISDN). No new hardware is required and the product works anywhere in the world. All you need is Internet access. It integrates seamlessly into your browser. You can adjust the settings to make it even faster. Internet traffic is accelerated both from and to your PC. In general, this is an install-it-and-forget-it program that functions silently in the background.Editor's review of Miliki Dial-Up Accelerator
Slow-connection users often switch off images to speed up page download, but that can mean surfing without navigation. Miliki Dial-Up Accelerator claims to find a compromise, stripping out a predetermined amount of colors and pixels to reduce image size. You can easily turn acceleration on or off from an Internet Explorer panel. A sample picture shows the effects of the four degrees of quality/speed trade-off. Miliki can be used with your browser and with mail clients. In our testing, the reduction made files 1.5 to 2 times smaller. Note that the maximum acceleration setting blurs images considerably, and that surfing speed depends on more factors than image compression. Although the tool is effective, it would be more so if it tweaked other Internet settings.
