Process Explorer is an advanced process management utility that picks up where Task Manager leaves off. It will show you detailed information about a process including its icon, command-line, full image path, memory statistics, user account, security attributes, and more. When you zoom in on a particular process you can list the DLLs it has loaded or the operating system resource handles it has open. A search capability enables you to track down a process that has a resource opened, such as a file, directory or Registry key, or to view the list of processes that have a DLL loaded. The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window, which you can close, depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you will see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you will see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Version 11.13 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

TweakVista is a comprehensive utility designed to enable users to configure and optimize their Windows Vista based system. TweakVista enables both casual PC users and power users to safely alter hundreds of different settings in Windows Vista to ensure users are getting the most out of their PCs.Features include a consolidated recommendations area, an assessment/benchmarking suite that allows users to see how their systems stack up to others, an easy to use security configuration screen, power use estimates to evaluate the running cost of your PC and carbon footprint, an interactive start-up process manager and start-up profiles, and much more. TweakVista is the type of utility that every Windows Vista user should have on their PC.Editor's review of TweakVista
Do more than just tweak
TweakVista takes an unnecessarily complicated interface provided by Microsoft and simplifies it by organizing the myriad of system options into one clean design. The app starts with a list of 10 options on the left nav, ranging from Start Up and Resources, down through Security and Power, and ending with Miscellaneous Tweaks. Each tab opens a new panel of topic-specific options, most with tabs of their own delineating between basic and advanced functions. For example, the Services tab controls access to many of the background processes. There are preconfigured Profiles for gamers, for saving memory, and so on. The Features tab, though, lets you pick and choose specific settings. The Power option is useful for more than just laptop users, though. It also gives you a carbon footprint of your computer usage based on your hardware, and extrapolates it for a year's worth of use. Who knows if it's accurate, but it's good reminder that computers aren't running on the power of love. Whether you want to make adjustments or simply learn more about what Vista is doing, TweakVista gives both Vista newbies and power users abilities that go beyond mere "tweaking," without the headaches that Vista is infamous for.

Belarc gives you a comprehensive PC analysis - for free
Hiring a professional computer-security consultant is out of reach for most home PC users, but Belarc Advisor can fill part of that gap. The app analyzes a machine's weak points, looking at elements such as whether antivirus software is up to date, or whether all the security flaws in Windows have been patched. It uses the Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmark test to give the computer a score showing its overall security level, and produces a report that can be viewed in a Web browser. Not only does it analyze software and operating system components and tell you where problems are, but in its comprehensive report it tells you what your computer's physical components are: not just how much RAM you have, for example, but what kind of RAM and which slots are occupied. This program doesn't fix the problems itself, but gives clear advice on how to address each issue. This download is free for personal use; we recommend it to home users as a first step in securing their home systems, or for those considering a hardware upgrade who want to see what's in their current system.

System Mechanic breathes new life into old PCs and keeps new ones running as they should. System clutter, performance drains, insufficient security, and corrupted settings can all degrade a PC's operation. Instead of buying dozens of individual products, use System Mechanic to remedy all these issues and more. Over 30 tools work together to diagnose PC health, optimize settings, repair problems, clean out clutter, and protect against Web threats. Version 7.1.10 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes. Note: The Download Now link will download a small installer file to your desktop. Remain online and double-click the installer to proceed with the actual 16.72MB download.Editor's review of System Mechanic
As with any machine, your PC needs regular tune-ups to maintain peak performance. This virtual toolbox can enhance the speed, safety, and power of your computer with a wide range of functions and an extensive help system. System Mechanic performs cleanup, optimization, and privacy protection with equal agility. As with similar tune-up utilities, it enables you to clean up your registry, remove junk files, and customize hidden settings to improve performance. The app has additional tools for removing spyware and for defragmenting your hard drive, eliminating the need for multiple utility programs. There is an undo function that restores your system to its previous state, but its hidden in the SafetyNet tab and doesnt allow you to bring back one item at a time. The program also lacks a system profiler. In addition, some users may prefer a more generic Windows-style interface with top-level access to all functions. The bottom line, however, is that System Mechanic is one of the most complete, effective, and easy-to-use tune-up utilities we've seen to date.

Magnifying Glass Pro is a flexible zoom-utility that magnifies portions of the screen under your mouse cursor or caret. A magnifier is useful to designers, engineers, visually impaired users, PC-to-TV connections, multi-monitor systems. It contains a unique set of features: many visual options, auto-change Glass settings upon application detection, easy-to-control Glass with on-screen HUD. Languages: English, Russian. Version 1.4 improves Windows Vista compatibility.Editor's review of Magnifying Glass Pro
This great tool stays true to its name, offering a resizable window that magnifies whatever your cursor rolls over. Magnifying Glass Pro is easy to set up and use. Once it launches, you can roll your cursor over anything on the screen and get a resizable frame that zooms in on the area, just like a magnifying glass. By right-clicking on the system tray icon, we opened the Options dialog box, from which we easily were able to set the size of the magnifying pane, adjust the thickness and color of its frame, set the amount of zoom (from 0.7 to 16), and configure some effects, such as managing the contrast of the magnified area. We were especially pleased to see that we could even enlarge the size of the tool's pop-up menu and dialog boxes; clearly some real thought went into the needs of the tool's users. The tool worked great and responded quickly in all our tests, both on browser windows and in applications. The mouse gesture commands feature was stellar. However, you may want to change the predefined hot key for launching and closing the tool, because in Word it simultaneously launched the Go To dialog box and Magnifying Glass Pro. We recommend this shareware to anyone needing vision help while working on his or her computer.

Auslogics System Information provides you with computer and Windows details, installed devices, running processes and services, memory and CPU usage and other information. You can explore details of your computer hardware, disk drives, processor, video card and monitor. It is much easier to use and understand than the built-in Windows system information tool. This system information tool can generate a comprehensive HTML report. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.Editor's review of Auslogics System Information
With hardly a stumble, this freeware utility quickly collects and reports information about your system. Auslogics System Information's multipage interface is logically ordered, easily navigated, and sortable. We especially enjoyed the last, as columns on each page could be immediately sorted with quick clicks on category headers. The simple and advanced modes were very similar and most users will quickly choose the latter. Auslogics System Information is both reliable and comprehensive; both primary requirements of this genre. It's also quick. Total system scans took seconds on our test machines. Fourteen categories of information, ranging from hardware to operating system are logically displayed. However, information found is not explained for the novice. The publishers obviously expect intermediate to advanced users to operate this application. Information from select pages can be placed on the clipboard with a single click. Creating a report couldn't be easier as you merely choose HTML, XML, or plain text and press a single button. This freeware information-gathering tool is fast, comprehensive, and reliable, and recommended for intermediate users and above.

The power and simplicity of GParted on a biz-card size LiveCD. The CD aims to be fast, small in size (~50mb), and use minimal resources to get that disk partitioned the way you want it. GParted LiveCD uses Xorg, the lightweight Fluxbox window manager, and the latest 2.6 Linux Kernel. Being up to date is important! GParted LiveCD will be updated along side the GParted source releases and have minor releases when bugs are fixed or new filesystem tools become available. The CD also offers the following programs: parted and fdisk vi, ntfs-3g, partimage, testdisk, Terminal and Midnight Commander. And also tool to make screenshots.Editor's review of GParted LiveCD
This heavy-duty partition tool isn't for novices or the faint of heart, but experienced users will find this tool invaluable. This ISO file is a suite of applications you burn to disk and use to boot your system. The program uses a mixture of command line menus and GUI-based applications. No matter your experience level, we recommend finding and studying the online documentation. This isn't the kind of program where most users should try and wing it. At boot, you choose from a selection of options to run GParted or boot from other partitions. You may need to choose one of the special options depending on your hardware. GParted itself is a complex collection of menus and functions to perform almost any partition function. The program is part of a simple GUI. You can easily check, create, copy, resize, remove, or delete partitions on most hard-drive models. You can easily destroy your operating system, so deliberation is the key to safety. The documentation presents the easiest method to each task. Most are accomplished in a few easy steps. As with any program this complex, your experience depends on your knowledge and hardware. Some users will find GParted works perfectly and easily, and others will give up after the first attempt. We recommend this very useful freeware tool for experienced users.

TuneUp Utilities 2007 will make Windows even faster, more comfortable and more secure than ever. All important aspects of system configuration, security, cleanup and maintenance can be accessed through a modern graphical interface: Configuring the system, making backups and performing maintenance can be easily carried out using the intuitive user interface--all easily done in one program at a single glance; Now available for Windows Vista.Version 6.0.22 is Windows Vista compatible.Editor's review of TuneUp Utilities 2007
This full-featured suite makes friends easily
To call TuneUp Utilities 2007 useful would drastically understate the situation. The app provides users with a powerful, well-designed utility that accesses the entire Windows maintenance tool set and more in a fast, organized, and easy-to-use series of connected modules. Temp file management, registry cleaners and start-up program controls are the bread-and-butter of these utilities, and these basics work in TuneUp more quickly and easily than most. However, the app also sports great add-on tools you don't usually see in a utility program. It offers a variety of Internet and program-acceleration tweaks as well as Windows performance enhancers. The crash-preventing MemOptimizer, a file shredder, deleted file recovery, and a respectable uninstall utility round out the suite. You even can automate maintenance tasks with the scheduler or tweak Windows' appearance with the styler tool. The built-in RescueCenter can restore all changes completely or one by one. The only thing missing is a built-in hard drive defragger, but it seems petty to complain. The system-analyzing wizard, with its thorough reporting and upgrade suggestions, is worth the program price alone. Between the guts of steel and the stylish, logically arranged interface, TuneUp Utilities suits all users--from complete beginners who will appreciate the one-click optimization to more daring users who will experiment with all the settings.

More configurable. Usability: Allow\Disallow multiple instances. Autocomplete files and directories by "\"- Escape to clear current input. Add shortkey to QuickLaunch Tools. Drag and Drop file or directory directly. Put current tab title on the main window title.Editor's review of PowerCmd
This tool enhances your command prompt with an easy-to-use Windows GUI-style interface. PowerCMD's interface contains multiple command prompt consoles in tabs. You can easily configure the display fonts, and colors. It's just as easy to configure window placement with options to run multiple consoles in vertical, horizontal, row, and grid forms. To really speed up working with the program, PowerCMD's auto-complete feature quickly displays applicable folder and file names as you type. It takes little time or trouble to change items on the toolbar. For users who work with command windows and other programs simultaneously, you can simply add a quick-launch button on the toolbar with a few clicks. PowerCMDs log, export to text, and minimize to tray features are simple solutions to daily needs. If there was anything we didn't like with PowerCMD, it was the inability to leave Autocomplete enabled. Reselecting it was only a mouse click, but it was an irritating extra step that could have been avoided. Still, power users who spend a lot of time using DOS commands will find this program handy and efficient.

EasyBCD is a powerful bootloader modification tool created to give end users complete control over everything that happens while Windows Vista starts up. It has the ability to set up multi- and dual-boot profiles for Windows Vista + Linux, BSD, Mac OS X, and many more operating systems. With EasyBCD, users can quickly and easily get other operating systems up and running with Windows Vista with minimal pain and effort. Version 1.6.2.2 rewritten Linux/BSD Support, Diagnostics Center, OS X improvements, Memory Usage Enhancements, and BCD Recreation/Reset Options. Editor's review of EasyBCD
It's small, free, powerful, and flexible, and advanced users will get a jewel in this handy system boot tool. EasyBCD's crisp, clean, and logical interface presents everything you need to create a multi-OS boot system. Once the additional operating systems are installed, this utility makes it very easy to manage booting into an alternate OS. Most text windows are easy to read, though users are expected to have the knowledge to understand the information displayed. Almost all configurations are easily set from simple pull-down menus. The occasional button toggle is used, but neither type offers tool tips. You should read the extensive online documentation before installing this utility. As simple as it is to use, EasyBCD is flexible enough for most users. You can manage booting into Windows, Linux, Mac, or many other operating systems. A diagnostic center and numerous utilities are included that help you find and fix boot problems. The only downside is that not every tool is as well documented as EasyBCD. Simply put, EasyBCD is a must-have tool if you create a multiboot system.

This helps to navigate around your PC efficiently and swiftly using the middle mouse button. It makes the middle mouse button a magic wand to access your favorite folder/file/application within microseconds. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.Editor's review of Super Speed Launcher
This tiny tool artfully turns your middle mouse button into a file-, folder-, and application-access button, but the documentation is a bit muddled. Super Speed Launcher's tray icon interface is barely more than a list of three functions. Simply right click it to add, delete, or view current shortcuts to your items. The Readme file documentation may confuse some users, but the program is actually easy to implement and use.Super Speed Launcher takes a few clicks to set up. The program's odd terminology uses Code to describe the simple name used for a shortcut. You just need to browse to the file or folder you want to load when selecting that Code. Using the function is as easy as clicking the middle mouse button and selecting the shortcut you desire.Deleting a Code takes just a second, as does viewing a list of current codes. Every level user will find Super Speed Launcher easy to install, run, and operate. The program is small, takes little memory to run, and adds a very handy function to your system.

TinyResMeter is a small tool that display usefull realtime system resources informations, but it also give much more details thru context menu when you right-click over displayed fields. A Professionnal version is under construction and will monitor, alert, and make statitics about Services/Processes usage (CPU/RAM/Resources/Alive). Powerfull tool for Servers and Desktop machines monitoring, it will be able to remote send notify/alerts to Administrators.Editor's review of TinyResMeter
This freeware executable displays important Windows information, takes screenshots, and does it all with the barest of memory overhead. TinyResMeter's interface resides in your tool tray, opens with a mere right click, and couldn't be easier to set up. Making this program's display fit your desktop font and colors takes seconds to accomplish. We love any Windows tool that doesn't require installation. Click TinyResMeter and it is working immediately. We wish it would default to showing all 18 display items instead of the sole message that no items are displayed. However, it gives the user the chance to choose any or all of the 18 informational items this program displays. From time, CPU usage, cache peak, and RAM usage through drive listing, TinyResMeter lists on your desktop the information many users need. All the meters and other information display accurately and in real time. You can conveniently take screenshots of the active window or your entire desktop and automatically save them as numbered bitmaps. The only problem we had with this application was the awkward four-key method to bring it to front. System administrators and power users will find TinyResMeter an accurate and helpful tool to have.

This utility reads the AutoComplete file of Microsoft Outlook (with .NK2 extension), displays all Email records stored in it, and allows you to easily export these records into text, html, or xml file.Editor's review of NK2View
This very handy freeware reads your Outlook AutoComplete file to easily export the list of e-mail addresses it contains. NK2View's standard spreadsheet style interface won't dazzle users with color or graphics, but information is complete, logically displayed, quickly sorted, and easily exported to HTML, text, or XML files. NK2View takes just a second to open your default or any found .NK2 file. It displays the name, e-mail address, server type, AutoComplete value, and recipient type, and you merely click a column header to sort the addresses as you like. The only thing we didn't find that we wanted was the ability to sort by e-mail domain. A simple text find function is quick and easy to use. NK2View excels with report generation. Simple HTML reports can contain all or a selected portion of the addresses. You can also save addresses in many other formats. Text, tabbed text, horizontal or vertical HTML, or XML files are created with only a couple of clicks. NK2View's audience is not limited to those with Microsoft Outlook. True, you can't open an item's detail window without it, but you can open the NK2 file from any user or system. This freeware is an easy one to recommend for those looking to explore Outlook AutoComplete files.

This tiny app quickly closes frozen programs, but clicking too fast or in the wrong spot could cause problems. One Click App Killer doesn't have a standard interface, as it simply turns your mouse pointer into a bull's-eye. Click anywhere on the frozen application's interface to quickly eliminate it from your screen and memory. We found it is possible to click too fast and eliminate the wrong program. Also, clicking outside the frozen program's interface could close Windows. Those were rare problems with this stable utility. Other than user error we found nothing wrong with this application. It performs as promised and with low overhead. We only wish it was a simple executable without need for installation. Any level user will be happy with this freeware's performance.

This close to perfect
Maintaining proper disk hygiene is like going to the dentist: You do it because you have to, but it's rarely easy and almost never pleasant. PerfectDisk is a friendly alternative that picks up where Windows' Disk Defragmenter leaves off, adding powerful features, an attractive interface, and a top-notch help file with clear instructions and definitions. In addition to the standard defragmentation process, it offers a SmartPlacement option, which analyzes usage patterns and organizes data to minimize future fragmentation. Another useful option is offline defragmentation, which optimizes parts of the drive, such as the Master File Table and the page file, that can't be modified while Windows is running. On your next bootup, PerfectDisk takes over, optimizes the selected files, and lets Windows proceed with start-up. The interface features big buttons, bold but complimentary colors, and is short on drawbacks. The program also offers statistical analysis, scheduled maintenance, and the ability to defragment remote computers running another copy of PerfectDisk. That last feature is perfect for IT staffers, but we recommend the app to home users, too. At its price, PerfectDisk isn't a bargain--but getting this close to perfect doesn't come cheap.
