FontTwister lets you create impressive text effects for Web pages, illustrations, multimedia projects and presentations in seconds. Add glows, bevels, transparency, embossing, texture, edges, soft shadows, and blurs to your text or apply one of the dozens of built-in styles. Results are immediately previewed, and text and effects may be re-edited at any time. FontTwister supports several popular image formats (BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WMF).Editor's review of FontTwister While many designers use high-end graphics applications to add effects to text, this program provides a more specialized and economical solution for stylizing TrueType fonts. The program has many unique features, such as the randomizer, which generates a series of random text effects and displays the results in a slide show window. Output options are plentiful, but in order to retain a fully editable vector image, you must save your text as a FontTwister file (FTF). Some of the preset and random effects are cheesy, but the program gives you extensive control over each effect so you can design text effects to meet specific needs. What's more, the developer's Web site has many additional styles, textures, and fonts that you can download for free. All in all, FontTwister is intelligently designed and easy to use.

GlyphMap is a Java 1.4 graphical (GUI) application to display raw glyphs in fonts supported by the Java run-time environment, generally TrueType fonts. You work with characters, whereas glyphs are bits and pieces that a font combines to produce the characters you see. In most cases, one character maps to one glyph. An accented letter could be constructed from two separate glyphs, one for the letter and one for the accent, or could be defined as a single glyph. The choice is made by the font designer. A font like "Arial Unicode MS" has 38,917 characters from 50,377 glyphs. Some fonts have glyphs that don't correspond to any Unicode character. If this distinction between characters and glyphs confuses you, then you should probably be using the CharMap Java application instead. (Please read the PDF documentation included in the ZIP file. This program has been released under the GNU General Public License.) This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.
